Teen Years & Late Identification
Many neurodivergent young people are first identified in their teen years. They may have masked for years, coped academically, and then struggle as demands increase.
Signs that may appear later
- Burnout, shutdowns or withdrawal after years of ‘coping’.
- New anxiety, depression or school refusal.
- Strong sense of being ‘different’ but not knowing why.
- Extreme exhaustion from social masking.
Why late diagnosis happens
- High ability masking underlying difficulties.
- Stereotypes about autism, ADHD or other profiles.
- Girls and AFAB young people presenting differently.
- Changes in school demands or environment.
Support for teens
It can be a relief to have an explanation for lifelong struggles. Good support includes psychoeducation, reasonable adjustments, mental health support, and space to explore identity safely.
