Reports & How to Use Them

Assessment reports can feel long and technical. Think of them as a toolkit: they explain what is happening, why it matters, and what might help.

What a good report includes

  • A clear summary in plain language.
  • Strengths as well as needs.
  • Specific descriptions of difficulties, not just labels.
  • Concrete, realistic recommendations for home and school.

Using reports in school

  • Share the report with the SENCO and key teachers.
  • Highlight the recommendations section.
  • Ask how these can be built into support plans.

Using reports for an EHCP

Reports form part of the evidence that a local authority considers. Clear descriptions of needs and recommended provision are especially helpful.

Questions to ask the professional

  • “Can you explain this section in simpler terms?”
  • “Which recommendations are highest priority?”
  • “How can we measure whether things are improving?”
