Reports & How to Use Them
Assessment reports can feel long and technical. Think of them as a toolkit: they explain what is happening, why it matters, and what might help.
What a good report includes
- A clear summary in plain language.
- Strengths as well as needs.
- Specific descriptions of difficulties, not just labels.
- Concrete, realistic recommendations for home and school.
Using reports in school
- Share the report with the SENCO and key teachers.
- Highlight the recommendations section.
- Ask how these can be built into support plans.
Using reports for an EHCP
Reports form part of the evidence that a local authority considers. Clear descriptions of needs and recommended provision are especially helpful.
Questions to ask the professional
- “Can you explain this section in simpler terms?”
- “Which recommendations are highest priority?”
- “How can we measure whether things are improving?”
