NHS Assessment Pathway
The NHS pathway is free and can be thorough, but it often involves waiting. Understanding the steps can make the process feel less overwhelming.
1. Sharing concerns
You talk to your GP, health visitor or school about what you are noticing at home and/or in class.
2. Referral
If appropriate, a referral is made to a community paediatrician, CAMHS, or neurodevelopmental team. This may require school input.
3. Waiting list
Waiting times vary by area and have increased in many regions. While you wait, you can still ask school for support and adjustments.
4. Questionnaires & information gathering
Parents and school are often asked to complete forms about development, behaviour, learning and mental health.
5. Assessment appointments
These may include structured observations, play or tasks with your child, and detailed history-taking with you.
6. Outcome and report
You should receive a clear explanation of findings, any diagnosis given (or not), and written recommendations for next steps.
Advocacy tips
