Early Signs (Primary Age)

Primary school often makes learning, communication and social differences more visible. Teachers and parents may notice similar things from different angles.

In the classroom

  • Struggling to follow multi-step instructions.
  • Falling behind in reading, writing or maths despite effort.
  • Very slow work, or rushing with lots of mistakes.
  • Appears ‘daydreamy’, distracted, or constantly moving.

Social and emotional signs

  • Finding it hard to make or keep friends.
  • Very intense friendships that quickly break down.
  • Frequent tears, anger or shutdown after school.
  • Worries about school or physical complaints (tummy aches, headaches) with no clear medical cause.

At home

  • Huge after-school meltdowns or exhaustion.
  • Need for strict routines or sameness.
  • Difficulty with self-care tasks (dressing, organisation, homework).

Next steps

Share your observations with the class teacher or SENCO. Keep a simple diary of patterns. You can also speak to your GP if you are concerned about neurodevelopmental differences such as autism or ADHD.
