Meltdowns
A meltdown is not bad behaviour. It is a sign that your child’s brain is overwhelmed and can no longer cope.
Common triggers
- Sensory overload (noise, light, crowds, clothing).
- Unexpected changes or broken routines.
- Social stress or masking all day at school.
- Hunger, thirst or tiredness on top of other demands.
During a meltdown
- Stay as calm and steady as you can.
- Reduce demands and spoken language.
- Lower sensory input (lights, noise, people).
- Ensure everyone is physically safe.
Afterwards
Reconnect when your child is calm. Offer comfort, snacks, water and rest. You can gently talk later about what helped and what didn’t.
