Meltdowns

A meltdown is not bad behaviour. It is a sign that your child’s brain is overwhelmed and can no longer cope.

Common triggers

  • Sensory overload (noise, light, crowds, clothing).
  • Unexpected changes or broken routines.
  • Social stress or masking all day at school.
  • Hunger, thirst or tiredness on top of other demands.

During a meltdown

  • Stay as calm and steady as you can.
  • Reduce demands and spoken language.
  • Lower sensory input (lights, noise, people).
  • Ensure everyone is physically safe.

Afterwards

Reconnect when your child is calm. Offer comfort, snacks, water and rest. You can gently talk later about what helped and what didn’t.
