ADHD

In one sentence

ADHD is a difference in how the brain manages focus, energy, and impulses — not bad behaviour or poor parenting.

What parents often notice first

  • Difficulty sitting still or relaxing.
  • Forgetting instructions or losing things easily.
  • Big emotions that seem to come from nowhere.
  • Hyperfocus on favourite interests or activities.
  • Teachers saying your child is bright but ‘inconsistent’.

What this means day-to-day

Children with ADHD often try very hard, but their brain finds organisation, waiting, planning and switching tasks especially demanding. School routines, long lessons and homework can feel exhausting.

When to seek help

If focus, organisation, or impulsivity are causing stress at home or school, or your child feels constantly ‘in trouble’ or different from peers.

Common myths

  • Myth: ADHD is caused by sugar or screens.
Truth: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference that is present from birth. Diet and screens can影响 behaviour but do not cause ADHD.
  • Myth: Only boys have ADHD.
Truth: Girls and non-binary children can also have ADHD; they often mask more and are underdiagnosed.
