Types of School

There are different types of school placement that may be considered for a child with SEND.

Mainstream school

Most children attend mainstream schools with SEN Support and, where needed, EHCPs.

Mainstream with resource base

Some schools have specialist provisions or bases on site for particular needs (e.g. autism resource bases).

Special schools

Special schools cater for children with more complex needs. Classes are usually smaller and staff often have specialist training.

Independent and non-maintained special schools

Some children attend independent special schools named in their EHCP if local options cannot meet their needs.
