Common Accommodations & Adjustments

These are examples of changes schools can make to help children with different needs. They do not all require an EHCP.

In the classroom

  • Clear, simple instructions broken into steps.
  • Visual timetables and checklists.
  • Flexible seating (front of class, quiet area).
  • Access to fidget tools or movement breaks.

For learning

  • Extra time for tasks and tests.
  • Use of laptops or tablets instead of handwriting.
  • Coloured overlays or larger print.
  • Reading out questions for children who struggle with reading.

For emotional regulation

  • Safe spaces or calm corners.
  • “Time-out” passes to leave class briefly.
  • Named adults for check-ins at key times.
